Earlier this year, Facebook created a stir when it added 50 gender options for its billions of users. For many people, it raised questions about the terms of identity and inspired some to ask: What is the difference between transsexual and transgender? Transsexuals are people who transition from one sex to another.
Asexual people can experience sexual arousal, romantic attraction and desire intimacy, but do not feel the need to act out those feelings in a sexual, physical way. Asexuality should not be confused with celibacy which is a distinct choice to not have sex. It is also used as slang, sometimes in a derogatory manner, to refer to all transgender women.
One's innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither — how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. One's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth. External appearance of one's gender identity, usually expressed through behavior, clothing, haircut or voice, and which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviors and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine.

People who have intersex conditions have anatomy that is not considered typically male or female. Most people with intersex conditions come to medical attention because doctors or parents notice something unusual about their bodies. In contrast, people who are transgendered have an internal experience of gender identity that is different from most people.
For example, a transgender person may identify as a woman despite having been born with male genitalia. Nearlyadults in the United States identify as transgender, according to research by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. A person's internal sense of being male, female or something else is their gender identity. For cisgender, or non-transgender people, their gender identity matches their sex at birth.
