The history of violence against LGBT people in the United States is made up of assaults on gay menlesbiansbisexualand transgender individuals LGBTlegal responses to such violence, and hate crime statistics in the United States of America. People who are perceived to be LGBT may also be targeted. The violence that has occurred over the existence of the LGBT community has been very extensive considering how long the incidents have occurred.
Even before the shooting rampage at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. Politicians have been divided on how to define the Orlando tragedy. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, has omitted any mention of gays when talking about the massacre, and Representative Pete Sessions of Texas has said the site of the shooting was not a gay club.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT people can face violence motivated by hateful attitudes towards their sexuality or gender identity. Violence targeted at people because of their perceived sexuality can be psychological or physical and can extend to murder. These actions may be motivated by homophobialesbophobiabiphobiatransphobiaand may be influenced by culturalreligious   or political mores and biases. Currently, homosexual acts are legal in almost all Western countriesand in many of these countries violence against LGBT people is classified as a hate crime with such violence often being connected with conservative or religious leaning ideologies which condemn homosexuality,   or being perpetrated by individuals who associate homosexuality with being weak, ill, feminine, or immoral.
